Byfleet Residents Neighbourhood Forum

Byfleet Residents Neighbourhood Forum was formed in 2013 in response to the Localism Act 2011.

“Instead of local people being told what to do, the Government thinks that local communities should have genuine opportunities to influence the future of the places where they live. The Act introduces a new right for communities to draw up a neighbourhood plan”
Department for Communities and Local Government, Localism Act 2011.

The Forum was set up specifically to produce a Neighbourhood Plan for Byfleet.  Following a Questionnaire and a series of Drop-in Meetings, a Vision and the Issues affecting Byfleet were identified and can be viewed on The Plan page together with timescales for the project.

In 2017, a draft plan Consultation Document was produced and it is available to view online here.  Hard copies were also available in key locations around the village such as the Library, Schools, Village Hall, Churches, Clubs, St Mary’s Community Centre etc.

We are now aiming to have our draft Plan available during 2021.

Current news:

Forum Re-designation

As a Neighbourhood Forum, we have to apply every five years to be re-designated by Woking Borough Council. We have submitted our application and Woking Borough Council will commence an 8 week public consultation on our Redesignation in early September, when residents and other stakeholders will be consulted. The application plus any comments will then be discussed at a full council meeting in December.

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)

CIL is paid by developers following development in the Village and a percentage is made available by Woking Borough Council for Councillors and the Forum to spend on improvements to our environment, as identified by residents. We recently had just under £8,000 to spend, which was topped up to £10,000 from Councillor Amanda Boote’s community fund. This has enabled us to improve the Sanway Road play area with new play equipment and an additional picnic bench. Remaining funds were used to replace a damaged memorial bench on Plough Green.

Save the Byfleet’s Green Belt

Following presentation of the latest Green Belt petition to a full Woking Borough Council meeting in December, Woking Borough Council Planning are now conducting a review of their Infrastructure Delivery Plan. In collaboration with West Byfleet and Pyrford Forums and the Residents’ Association, we have submitted questions and will be consulted in a series of Zoom meetings at the end of June.

Sanway-Byfleet Flood Alleviation Scheme

This scheme is being developed by the Environment Agency in partnership with Woking Borough Council, Surrey County Council, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Byfleet Flood Forum, Highways England, Thames Water and the local community.

A web page has been created to share information. Two virtual events were held in March 2021 and slides from those events are available to download. There is also link to an online survey to collect feedback and questions
